Finally moving the domain. Changing feeds.
Just a heads up but after almost a year of using this forwarding arrangement I am going to make the move to FredMcD.com.
I will warn you closer to the time but you will need to update your feed reader to point to the new site when it comes.
I’ve write a brief post about the history and coming changes to the blog. (I need to think up a better phrase than “after the jump”.) Carry on reading for more exciting details!
History of the domain
My dad, having been pretty tech savvy at the turn of the millennium, bought for both myself and my sister Helen a domain name. This was a somewhat brilliant stroke of forethought as trying to get it about a year ago (when I started blogging properly) would have probably resulted in a much more obscure name and possibly having to use omnutia.com (which I won’t be reserving as I keep that just for website signups) which is cool but not easy to point people to.
The reason for taking so long to move the domain proper is that it is currently held for me by 1and1.co.uk while my web hosting and more modern domains are stored with American webhost site5.com and the process is quite arduous.
Coming changes
- Firstly I need to make sure the Email address I have with the domain will work as soon after the transfer as possible, this will take a few days to test using a different domain.
- Secondly I need to backup the blog. I will probably just move the uploads folder to somewhere else on my webspace as downloading it will take too long.
- The site will go down as I transfer the domain, install wordpress onto it and then restore the backup. I will also take this time to set up the necessary email forwarding.
- The site will then go back up complete with new theme and features.
New blog features
I want to keep things to the necessities but, as I’m often online and you might have a question about something on the blog, I’m going to install a GTalk button so you can chat with me if you have a question about something on the site.
I’m also thinking of a cleaner version of my favorite black and gray colour scheme for the theme.
A minor thing but I am going to rework the way images are inserted to minimize work and maximize adaptability to new designs.
