Looking ahead to Totoro 2 [Home server]

Totoro, my home server, has just about reached the peak of it’s abbility. I couldn’t really expect a 600MHz processor to operate the complete feature set I had intended. While I may still add printer sharing, music streaming may be beyond it’s power. Firstly, because pulseaudio currently uses (20%x1.6GHz=) 320MHz on my laptop and secondly, as I can still only get in the range for a few MB/s over the wireless network.

Several times I have though about trying to go with a windows server system to make everything easier but I am still too woried about putting my important stuff where a virus could come in and wreck it.

For revision 2 I will again be using a repurposed machine, I would have liked to go with a laptop I have sitting idle, maybe detatching the screen. The problem beign I would need to find a USB wireless dongle compatible with linux (which I will look into anyway.). The two main features I want to work into the second revision will be sound streaming, so I can have my speakers working at any distance, and silent video encoding.

I am planning on custom building revision 3 when I have the money and using a mini-ITX board and case to do so.

  1. Hi Fred, I was reading your Sheeva Plug article which led me here. After doing a quick search on “Totoro Home Server”, I did not find much that explained what it was. Do you have any links that you could share?

    Thx!

  2. Totoro is just the network ID for it. It’s just a beige box running Ubuntu.
